I had to purchase this book for an introductory/orientation computer application class for an online program for Nichols College. I have concidered myself very computer literate, and was affraid this class would be boring and a waste. However, I am finding with this book working through the walk-through exercises and labs that I didn’t know everything. I have discovered many short cuts and easier ways to perform tasks I have previously labored to do like letter formatting. I have also learned many new keyboard shortcuts that help alot. Not having to switch back and forth to the mouse and back to the keyboard as much is a bonus.

Don’t get me wrong though, it is still broken down painstakenly into every individual step and keystroke, so for me, that is overkill. However, someone who has never laid eyes on any of these programs before, this book can take them a long ways in learning how to navigate the office suite, make striking letters, charts, and leaflets.

Not too many years ago, after-market books on applications such as Microsoft Word often contained pull-outs with frequently-used commands. These pull-outs seem to have gone by the wayside as publishers look to find ways to save money.

Microsoft Word 2007 has a new interface that often frustrates experienced users. I often find myself saying “I know where that command is in Word 2003, but where is it in Word 2007?” These laminated cards are great time-savers. I bought all three of the cards for Word 2007. The price is reasonable and the quality is good.

I had this book on backorder and raced through it as soon as it arrived. In a busy world preoccupied with success and materialistic pursuits, this was a breath of fresh air. A well written account of one man’s journey from corporate America to making a real change in children’s lives. This is a must read for all – it reminds us that we can all make a difference if we choose to do so. Also loved the inside peek at Microsoft and those who are at the helm. John Wood is funny, honest and a great storyteller. A great gift for young adults heading off to college or those starting on their own career path!

If you’re one of those people who always has a book in your bag, who snatches moments to read just one more page on the morning commute, and who really can’t imagine growing up without a library close at hand … this book is for you.

John Wood did what most people only dream of- he left a lucrative position in one of the world’s top companies to form a non-profit organization whose purpose it is to bring books, computers and a chance at education to children throught South and Southeast Asia.

And then he wrote a book about it. In it, he says that non-profit companies should work, in practical matters, very much like for-profit companies. They should be organized, passionate and focused. Wood takes some time to give readers pointers as to how to achieve this.

The success of the idea for the Room to Read organization has been amazing. I hope the success of the book matches that.

I only have one quibble with this book and that is that at some points, Wood seems almost whiny. There are at least a handful of times in which he is close to tears, and a few more in which he does some real soul-searching. Luckily for us readers, Wood writes more about these instances in his journal than in his book.

The book is passionate, upbeat and interesting- it really will make you want to do your part to make the world a better place.

Once I get a Step by Step series book, and its operating model is just what you need if you start from scratch or you’re an advanced specialist looking for updates. Very precise and clear explanations and companion CD with samples files for practicing just rocks!, you have the entire scenario and just need to get creative to escalate your neverending questions to the sample scenario, which is just as clear to see as on the field.

2007 version is just what I spected from the book, covering every topic from basic use to advanced control and tracking and integration with Project Server. You can notice PMI orientation in product, and that’s quite good worked on the book.

I missed some information regarding some intelligence moved from Office Project to PWA (Server), like enterprise fields and server settings (well I supposed I’ll get new stuff from the next MOC for Project Server)

If you want to solve questions regarding the use of the product, or maybe you’re trying to get quite the expertise for a terrific project management,this book will do the job

Microsoft Project is an unmatched tool for managing all aspects of a project, and the power of its integration with other MS tools is awesome. But its potential is very complex and not for the faint of heart. Before you start blithely loading your milestones and allocating your resources, you really need to understand the concepts of defining your project and conceptualizing the plan. The software won’t teach you that and it’s the easiest thing in the world to wind up with a Gantt chart that looks like the head of Medusa in no time flat.

That’s where this manual makes its mark. Yes, it’s a good primer on the software; yes, it’s a good reference manual as long as you can guess the term for what you want to do. “Unhide columns,” for example: that’s what I wanted to do this week, and two minutes with the index and a page reference got the job done for me. (Hint: it doesn’t behave exactly like Excel.)

Since I tend to shun manuals, I had not picked up this book until now. I took a moment to flip, and was impressed, and wound up starting at the beginning and going all the way through, reading here and there, checking the book’s organization and the points it made about project management. What a great resource! It’s an introductory project management course that will get the user started on the right foot.

Despite its name, Microsoft Project 2007: The Missing Manual is much more than a manual. I recommend it for anyone who wants to brush up on the key points of project management, and especially for anyone using the software for the first time (or the first time in a while, which is my situation). It can’t guarantee that your project will be a success, but it will greatly increase your understanding of what’s going right and wrong. This book is going to make you look good!

It’s alway been ironic when I’ve used other resources that the person who wrote the book explains all the buttons, but not when/why they are really used. “The Missing Manual” is the perfect marriage of function and purpose.

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive Reviews

Three cheers for this book and the other Thomson/Course Technology “Comprehensive” books addressing various applications in Microsoft Office 2007 (and, earlier, in Office 2003, etc.). The books are designed for successful use (either on a self-study basis, or in formal courses) on the part of those who, starting with no prior knowledge, want to bring themselves up to a skill level corresponding to what Microsoft terms “Microsoft Certified Application Specialist.” Here are some of the distinguishing features of this Excel 2007 book:

(1) The book makes effective use of color, including frequent and well annotated screen shots.

(2) The book presents material in a highly readable, step by step way. (This might be a disadvantage for fast-track users of the book who do not need or want that much “hand holding,” but it does mean that just about any motivated person who works conscientiously with the book can achieve success.)

(3) Each of the 12 chapters is set in the context of a “case” providing meaningful settings within which the application potential of Excel is brought into focus, usually in a “business-related” way. (This contrasts with some books that describe “how to do this” and “how to do that,” but might lack motivation for WHY it might be of interest to be able to do this or do that.) Peripheral benefit: the book provides an informal introduction to some aspects of business, in the sense of extracting information from data to provide insights and perhaps support fundamental decision making.

(4) Each chapter concludes with a set of five exercises or “cases,” starting with an exercise in which the reader is asked to extend the material developed in the body of the chapter. Starting-point workbooks for these exercises (and for the case presented in the body of the chapter itself) can be downloaded from the publisher’s website. Workbook “solutions” for the cases can be downloaded by instructors using the book in a course setting. (Although some of the exercises include “explore” steps, the exercises do largely tend to take a “follow the bouncing ball” approach, which helps the user ease into the material but probably falls short for fast-track users who might want to be challenged to be more creative in applying the material, i.e., “Here’s a situation, and here’s the information that is to be developed in this situation. Starting from scratch and using your own wits entirely, develop the information. No step by step approach is provided for your use. You’re on your own. Go to it!”

(5) The book is certified by Microsoft as containing the Excel material that, when mastered, puts the user in a position to pass Microsoft’s “Certified Application Specialist” exam. This certification, in turn, can be a valuable resume’ entry for some people in the workforce. (Ditto for similar certifications for Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and so on.)

(6) There is a companion book (“Casegrader,” by Crews and Murphy, ISBN 978-1-4239-9823-5) consisting of twelve “cases” integrated with the Excel material presented in the corresponding chapters in the Parsons, Oja, Auer, and Carey book. After developing the workbook for a Crews and Murphy case, the workbook can be uploaded to a website for automatic scoring, with a step by step analysis and report produced as a result. (The Crews and Murphy cases fall into the “follow the bouncing ball” category, but have the virtue of forcing use of the Parsons et al. material after the material has been studied. In my opinion, Parsons et al. and Crews and Murphy are best used together in this sequence: (a) Study a Parsons et al. chapter. (b) Do the corresponding Crews and Murphy case, keeping at it until you score 100% on it. (c) Do at least two of the Parsons et al. exercises at the end of the chapter. (d) Proceed to the next Parsons et al. chapter, etc.)

This text book is very thorough: It provides excellent pictures, so there is no guess work as to whether you did something right or not; it walks you through everything step-by-step; gives you real life scenarios of projects; and also gives you necessary information as to what is and is not professional – when certain visuals should be used as opposed to other for given information, data, statistics. This is definitely a book that I will not be selling back to the school bookstore :0). I’m tabbing it up so I know where to jump to when I need help and keeping it until Excel 2012 comes out!

Great book and cd resources; but the online testing and training resources are so full of glitches that they should be avoided. This book and online resource was required for a 101 course, and more than one-third of the class bailed in the first three weeks because of the online glitches.

I’ve been using MS Office for a decade; and I thought I’d update on Microsoft Office 2007. The online resources are so full of glitches that it teaches you to fear the next step. Flip side: This could be a truly great resource if they get the glitches out. (May 2010)

BEWARE: New copies come with an access code to online training and testing. However, if you buy a used copy for a college course, the access code is already used, and you must allow for a new access code. Don’t be fooled!

If you’re trying to earn a grade, the online training and tests have too many glitches. The many little glitches (no stoppers) irritate and confound students, eat up hours, and impact your grade. Big no-no, Pearson.

Instructors would hope this program would make grading easy; but that is not the case. Since the glitches affect the grading, the instructor spends excess time correcting the program errors, multiplied by number of students.

I hope the Pearson Company finishes the job on this course (debugs it), because this could be great course. But I wouldn’t subject college students to its peculiarities until it’s fixed.

I have found this series to be well written but kind of tedius. They have you do the same thing over and over. Maybe its to drill it in but it gets quite boring.

They also need to give full size examples of what the given document is supposed to look like at the end of the chapter. They make it microscopic so you can hardly read it.
